Capabilities

In the furnaces present at the Institute of Materials and Joining Technology (IWF) samples can be heat treated with a temperature profile within a couple of minutes or multiple days. For this pupose common chamber furnaces with air atmosphere or chamber and pipe furnaces  using inert atmospheres (Nitrogen, argon, hydrogen) are used to avoid unwanted chemical reactions.

The usage of several cooling media (hardening oil, polymer solution, salt melts and pressured air) as well as machines for hardenability make it possible to investigate the behavior of materials under rapid cooling conditions. In joint with the other capabilities of  the IWF (Metallography, Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, Corrosion as well as Mechanical and Non-destructive testing) reseach and services for industrial partners can be conducted.
